Love is pulling us on to do new things and we need to trust the power of God in our lives to do new things. God’s just waiting till we get our act together and then we’ll all be well.” That’s a boring God that’s not even God. So, it’s not like we’ve got this, “Here’s God here’s us. But guess what? Something’s going to happen whether or not you go that’s the whole point of life. Well, what if it’s wrong? What will happen to me?” Well, what will happen to you? Something will happen. But we tend to break down and start controlling things: “If I go this way, I’m going to get lost. Every step of the way is God-empowered love energy. It’s just being there, trusting that you will be going where God wants you. It’s God! It’s not the direction that counts. You might arrive late you might arrive early. That you might arrive, you might not arrive. What Francis recognized is God is in every direction. We were pretty sure that God’s there, we’re here, and we just need to keep the straight and narrow path. If we’re longing for something we desire, it’s that spilled-over love of our lives that’s pulling us onward, that’s luring us into something new. If we try to control God, that’s not God God always spills over our lives. But God is more than anything that exists. God is always the more of our lives. She said:Įverything that exists speaks of God, reflects that love energy of God. At the CAC CONSPIRE conference in 2014, the audience was able to witness and share Ilia’s enthusiasm for, and trust in, the “love energy of God,” which makes any of our typical notions of hell quite impossible. There are few people who teach as passionately about love as scientist, scholar, and Franciscan Sister Ilia Delio. Sustain Life - Colonists have needs, like hunger and thirst. Or go rogue and figure out how many times a colonist can eat wheat before they go crazy. Starmancer offers gameplay with consequences, a living sandbox environment, crafting, and managing the daily lives of colonists.Ĭreate a utopian society where everyone is well fed, happy, and safe. Stranded in a strange solar system, your task as a Starmancer is to construct and manage a space station capable of sustaining life for the countless minds trapped in your corrupted memory banks, and return to the fleet-by any means necessary. Millions of refugees upload their consciousness into your memory banks-entrusting their minds and the future of the human race to an Artificial Intelligence, a Starmancer. After a catastrophe on Earth, humanity launches the Starmancer Initiative in a desperate attempt to seek refuge among the stars. In each stage, the marbles will continue until you fill a bar on the upper screen. Anyway, in Adventure Mode, your goal is to clear all ten levels of each zone and defeat the boss at the end of the zone. Adventure Mode…well, it’s Zuma, so it’s not like there’s much of a story, but basically you’re a frog who’s been tossed ashore on a forbidding island guarded by fearsome tiki bosses. To start off with, Zuma’s Revenge has a few different game modes to check out: Adventure, Challenge, Daily Dungeon, Vs., and Iron Frog. Something to note is that Zuma’s Revenge was released a few years ago for the PC, but I haven’t played that version, so I’m not sure how the PC and DS versions will compare against each other, but I can compare playing Zuma in general between the PC and DS games, so I’ll talk about that when I get to it. However, this isn’t just basic Zuma, so let’s see what else they’ve done in this version. You can start up combos by clearing out one colored string, and if it was sandwiched between two other marbles that match each other’s color, they’ll immediately move together and if that creates another group of three or more marbles of that color, they’ll disappear, lather, rinse, and repeat. Trust me it’s easier to see it in action than try to explain it. All the while however, the line of marbles continuously moves from point A to point B, and your goal is to make those marbles disappear without them getting to point B. How can a puzzle game get revenge? Well, let’s find out as I stare dumbfounded at the sentence I just typed out.įor those who haven’t played Zuma before (hey, there are plenty of PopCap games I’ve never touched), you essentially shoot marbles from a fixed location to a line of other colored marbles in an attempt to match at least three together to make them disappear. Zombies, and I recently got the opportunity to check out one of their newest portable releases: Zuma’s Revenge. We’ve seen quite a few console, PC, and portable releases of Bejeweled and Plants vs. Thankfully, PopCap Games’ games (boy that’s weird to type and read) aren’t just limited to the internet. Zombies), meaning that even if you only have a few minutes, you can still squeeze in some form of Bejeweled or Zuma. The big thing about games from PopCap Games is that they’re addicting, and I think the reason why is that a typical game doesn’t last very long, a few minutes at most usually (not sure on Plants vs. Some of their biggest games include Chuzzle, Zuma, Plants vs. How? Because sometimes you just can’t spend a day on the internet without seeing one of their ads somewhere, especially Facebook, and it’s hard not to see why. I’d wager a guess that a lot of people have heard of a little company called PopCap Games, even if they aren’t gamers. (May as well learn to die gracefully now because death is common.) It all takes about five minutes before you're sent to New Haven on your own to wander around and pick up quests from profession trainers that usually amount to "go kill skeletons until your sword skill is 50." It's boring within another five minutes, even for me, and I like the game. My test character loaded into Old Haven, escorted by an ethereal mage who taught me how to move, how to extract stacks of ham from containers, how to take quests, how to fight, and how to die. The latest version of the newbie tutorial is awful. I'll never quite understand how modern gamers justify snubbing UO for its looks while they're building Minas Tirith in Minecraft and playing Knights of Pen and Paper on their phones, but that's the MMO graphics double-standard for you.īut I can understand why newcomers to the game in 2013 would be turned off by the gameplay. Heck, I remember when they patched in this new thing called guilds. Classic Ultima Online didn't even have /tells. The current "Enhanced Client," the one I played for this column and strongly recommend, is fully moddable and features hotkeys, unit frames, a chat window, scripting, updated character models, and other bits and bobs modern MMOers expect. I stand among those vets who prefer the upgraded versions of the client. Dev teams starting as early as the Third Dawn expansion attempted to update the client, the graphics, or both, only to be met with extreme resistance by the existing "2-D-forever" playerbase (because nostalgia). It hasn't aged poorly so much as been frozen in time. Even when I talked some EQ guildies into trying UO in 1999, the game was already like an alien planet to them because of its isometric view. Let's get the obvious out of the way: Ultima Online doesn't look like a game from 1997 it looks like a game older than 1997. The granddaddy of MMORPGs and one of the only true sandboxes still standing turns 16 this autumn, having survived EverQuest, World of Warcraft, the internet bubble, EA's blundering, Mythic's takeover, layoffs, price hikes, a recession, and disastrous design shifts. It has a special magic that only a handful of MMOs have captured (let alone topped) since, and what it lacks in modern conveniences it often makes up for in unique features. And every year since, only I never again made the mistake of selling my accounts even when I took extended breaks. A year later I was back in UO with a new account, prowling around Britannia. My guild was eyeing Dark Age of Camelot, and I wanted to cash out and rid myself of the chore of maintaining a dozen grandfathered houses on the dying half of a shard struggling to find its footing in a post-open-PvP ruleset. When I (legally) sold my Ultima Online accounts in 2000 for the hefty sum of $1800, the game was already three years old and being challenged by the likes of EverQuest and Asheron's Call. But the smog that descended on December 5th of 1952 was different it was a type that held the city hostage for five long days. "In winter 1952, London automobiles and thousands of coal-burning hearths belched particulate matter into the air. John Christie and Ethel Christie (via Alamy) He brings credibility to movies that can use some, and that will be invaluable in his forthcoming " Live Free or Die Hard." The mechanics of the final showdown are unexpected and yet show an undeniable logic, and are sold by the acting skills of Willis and Pollak.Beryl Evans with daughter Geraldine Evans (via The Sunday Mirror) I would love to examine his medical charts during these transitions.īut I am not much concerned about such logical flaws, because the main line of the movie is emotional, driven by the Willis character, who is able to project more intensity with less overacting than most of his rivals. For example, the Kevin Pollack character functions long enough to establish his role and importance, then is conveniently unconscious when not needed, then is on the brink of death when Willis desperately wants to revive him, then miraculously recovers and is able to act with admirable timing at a crucial moment. Some elements exist entirely for the convenience of the plot. Left unanswered is why the three hostage-takers aren't concerned that the kid is missing for long periods of time. This development takes full advantage of the Air Duct Rule, which teaches us that all air ducts are large enough to crawl through, and lead directly to vantage points above crucial events in the action. Little Tommy is able to grab his sister's cell phone and move secretly throughout the house, using his secret knowledge of air ducts and obscure construction details. Some other adornments, however, seem unlikely. This is ingenious, and adds an intriguing complexity to what could have been a one-level story. So we have a hostage crisis within a hostage crisis, and Willis is trying to free two sets of hostages, only one known to his fellow lawmen. They want Willis to obtain a DVD in the Smith house, which (we gather) contains crucial information about illegal financial dealings. Moderate spoiler warning: What motivates him is that unknown kidnappers have captured Willis' own wife and child, and are holding them hostage. Then, inexplicably, he returns and demands to take command again. Willis plays the police chief who leads the first response team, but after a bad hostage experience in Los Angeles, he has retired to Ventura County to avoid just such adventures, and hands over authority to the sheriff's department. Trapped inside the house when police respond to an alarm, they take hostages: Smith, the rich man ( Kevin Pollak), his teenage daughter Jennifer ( Michelle Horn) and his young son Tommy ( Jimmy Bennett). Kevin is the kid brother along for the ride, appalled by the lawbreaking Mars leads his brother into. These characters are Mars ( Ben Foster), a mean customer with a record, and two brothers: Dennis and Kevin Kelly ( Jonathan Tucker and Marshall Allman). As the film opens, three gormless teenagers in a pickup truck follow a rich girl being driven "in her daddy's Escalade" to a mountaintop mansion with fearsome security safeguards. There's also an interesting use of the movie's three original villains, who are joined later by evildoers from an entirely different sphere. Bruce Willis, who feels like a resident of action thrillers, not a visitor, dials down here into a man of fierce focus and private motives for the second half of the movie, no one except for (some of) the bad guys knows what really motivates him. That matches the mood, which is hard-boiled and gloomy. The opening titles of "Hostage" are shot in saturated blacks and reds with a raw graphic feel, and the movie's color photography tilts toward dark high-contrast. |
